GenAI News & Networking Event
On 25th August 2025, Dr Yvonne Power participated as a panel member at the Engineers Australia Generative AI (GenAI) News & Networking event. The discussion followed an introductory opening by Professor Sharath Sriram, Chief Scientist for Western Australia, and Adam Kinnest recently appointed General Manager of Engineers Australia WA Division. The panel addressed several topics, including:
- Opportunities and risk associated with the widespread adoption of GenAI.
- The evolution of jobs due to GenAI and measures to mitigate job loss risks.
- University approaches to prepare graduates for GenAI in the workplace.
- Adoption of GenAI in the local resources industry (mining, met, oil & gas).
- Skills required for graduates across different sectors.
- Guidelines and regulations regarding GenAI and their implications.
- Environmental impacts of GenAI on electricity, water and critical minerals.
- Guidance to individuals new to GenAI tools?
This event formed part of Curtin University’s research into how various industry sectors use GenAI and ways to better prepare STEM Graduates for employment. The study is supported by Curtin University’s Assessment 2030 Future Fund grant.
